Yixian is a small county located in the hilly areas of southern Anhui Province. With a population of around 100,000, it is the home of the two ancient villages of Xidi and Hongcun. For more than 800 years, people lived peacefully in this area. Geographical conditions protected the two villages from wars in the outside world. Today, Hui-style residential houses constructed during Ming and Qing Dynasties are still preserved there. The street plan, architecture and decoration, and the integration of the houses with comprehensive water systems are unique surviving examples of Hui-style architecture.
