Why teach English in China?

New postby Brande on Wed Mar 12, 2008 10:24 am

There are as many answers to that question as there are people teaching here. For some it's simply a year out before returning to the 'real' world where they get a 'real' job. For others its a way of staying in a country that fascinates them. For a few, it starts as the first and ends up as the second.

Whatever the reasons for your interest, there's no denying the importance of the nation. Milennia of isolation are coming to an end and cliches about the dragon awakening and this being the Chinese century abound. Cliches aside, this nation is set to be a big, maybe the biggest player in the future, first of Asia and potentially the world. Understanding it is by no means essential - but it's hardly going to hurt.

Working here has more to offer than an understanding of China itself. It's a huge and incredibly varied country, and I'm willing to wager that none of it will be what you expected. You'll live a life you never dreamed of, and see up-close a truly different way of life - a different culture.
